We decided to put in an orchard, to draw in beneficial insects, to feed our bees and to feed ourselves, I thought that we would just buy some trees in the spring and plant them, then let nature take her course. I had no idea that Scott wanted to try his hand at grafting apple trees! The root stock and scions (small branch cuttings from mature apple trees) of several varieties arrived about 4 weeks ago, and the grafting began. I knew that there’s a lot of art that goes into grafting, but if anyone could make it work, it would be Scott. So far we have about 50 small trees that have broken bud on the new scions (meaning that the graft worked!) and are going into the ground in a few weeks. When completed, our orchard will have apples (apparently lots of apples!), cherries, peaches and plums. Our bees should be very happy!
